Welcome! My name is Maria Calderon and I am the Middle School Bible Teacher. God has used me in so many wonderful ways and in many different places. I was born in Quito, Ecuador but raised in Miami. I am a beach girl who dreams about the mountains. In 2004, my life changed completely. God opened the doors for me to join the Adventures In Missions (AIM) program which took me to Lubbock, Texas for the 8 months of training. There I received an extended amount of Bible knowledge, team building courses, missions classes and discovered my passion for the lost. AIM took us all over the states and we also did some mission work in Mexico City. After the 8 months, teams were formed and 5 of us went to Recife, Brazil to embark on an amazing journey as missionaries. For 2 years Brazil became my home and the people there became my family. I was able to adapt to a different culture and thankfully enough learned Portuguese. It is still unclear whether or not I will ever return to Brazil but I know that my time there left a mark in my heart as well as in the lives of the people who came into my life. I graduated from the AIM program in 2007. As a Missionary I also spent time in New Orleans helping with the Katrina Relief Effort alongside Operation Nehemiah. I fell in love with the City and the people. Lasting relationships were built and many lives were touched through the Lord’s work, meeting physical needs so that we may meet their spiritual needs. My past experiences have led me here to Homestead. I am 100 percent certain this is where God wants me, so for the past 2 years I have been the Middle School Bible Teacher. My goal is to help my students build a relationship with Jesus. And so I feel it is appropriate to start from the beginning, Genesis. We are focusing on getting to know our star-breathing God. Who is He and why do we need a relationship with Him? Because of God, I have learned to love others and in this way find fulfillment in my life. God has taken me to different countries, allowed me to learn new cultures, and allowed me to love so many wonderful people who have impacted my life. I welcome this new journey in my life and it is my prayer that you join me as well.
